Blogs are a great way to build a website without any specialist technical knowledge. There are hordes of free blogging tools and services that can help you create a professional-looking blog, and most of them will also host your blog for free.
Wordpress.com is one of the biggest blogging sites, offering a host of free themes, easy-to-use publishing tools and hundreds of useful add-ons. In less than 30 minutes you can have your own corner of the internet to tell the world about your hobbies, family or anything else you want. Don’t believe us? Read on to find out how.
1. Sign up
Go to www.wordpress.com and click Sign Up. Follow the onscreen instructions, entering a name for your blog, the username you want to use, your email address and a password. As part of your account you get a free wordpress.com domain name, although you can pay for a .com account without the wordpress prefix. In this case we’re opting for the free option. Click on Create Blog.
2. Choose a theme
Wordpress will send you an activation email. Open it and click Activate Blog to be taken to your brand new blog, complete with a sample post. Click Edit this, and you’ll be taken to the post-editing screen. Replace the sample header and text with your own words. You can highlight and format your text using the tools in the toolbar .
3. Add a picture
Position your cursor where you want your photo to go and click on the Add Media icon above the toolbar . Click Select File to find the photo from your library. Once it has uploaded scroll down to choose whether you want it aligned to the left, right or centre of the text. Select the size you want it to be – choosing between large, medium, small and thumbnail – and click Insert Into Post.
4. Preview your post
Before you publish your post you can check how it appears. Go to the Publish pane and select Preview Changes to open a preview in a separate window. Check how it looks. If you want to make changes to the photo, go back to the post-editing screen, click on the picture and select Edit Image.
5. Change your theme
It’s easy to change the look of your blog by applying a different theme. Click Save Draft to save your work so far, and roll over Appearance on the left-hand menu. Select Themes from the drop-down menu. From here you can browse the hundreds of free themes included with your account. If you see one you like, select Live Preview to check it out and if you’re happy, click Save and Continue.
Click Posts on the left-hand menu and find the post you were writing in the list. Click Edit to be taken back to it. Once you’re ready, click Publish. Congratulations you have a blog!
