One of your laptop’s big plus points is its portability, which is possible with the help of its battery: this allows you to use the laptop away from mains power for hours at a time. But what happens if your battery isn’t working as you expect it to? In this FAQ we look at how to troubleshoot power issues with your laptop.
How can I tell if my battery is being charged?
Firstly, check the charging light on your Advent laptop: if it’s a different colour to the other lights – and it may also be flashing – it indicates the battery is currently charging.
To see how much charge your battery has, look for the battery icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar – click the ^ button if it’s not visible. Roll your mouse over the battery icon and you should see a message telling you it’s either charging or is fully charged.

My battery doesn’t hold charge like it used to – is this normal?
Sadly yes. Over time your battery capacity will drop as it starts to wear, which means it lasts less time between charges. The battery may even start to discharge when not in use, meaning you may need to allow extra time for charging if you haven’t used your laptop for a while. Consider storing the battery away from the laptop when not in use to minimise this effect.
To get an idea of how worn your battery is, download and install the free version of BatteryBar. Once installed, you’ll see a battery icon on the Taskbar . Roll your mouse over this and make a note of the Wear figure at the bottom. As your battery ages, this figure will increase, giving you an at-a-glance view of the condition of your battery.

What can I do to make my battery last longer?

My battery isn’t being charged – what should I check?
Check that the power leads are all firmly connected and switched on. You might also want to try the power lead in a different socket. Next, carefully turn your laptop over and check the battery itself is firmly clipped into place: try removing and reattaching it to make sure.
Also check that the metal contacts between the battery and laptop are clean: if not, unplug the laptop from the mains and dampen (not saturate) a cloth with isopropyl alcohol to carefully rub the dirt off. Finish by drying the cleaned area using a dry part of the cloth.

My battery’s stopped charging, and now I can’t start my computer
This could indicate a number of things – faulty battery, bad connection or a problem with your laptop’s power adapter or cable. If a friend or family member has an identical laptop, try their cable and then their battery with your laptop. If neither works, try your battery in their laptop to see if it charges. This helps you to identify where the fault lies.
