Windows 8.1 is coming. Find out how to bring your Advent computer up to date

Windows 8.1 is here, and is both a free and essential update for all Windows 8 users. In this guide we’ll show you how to easily and safely update your Advent Windows 8 PC to Windows 8.1. Before you begin, check out our ‘Explained’ guide, which reveals what’s new and exciting in Windows 8.1. But before you begin, we’d also recommend you check out our step-by-step guide to backing up your important documents and files in Windows 8.

Once done, you’re ready to follow this simple guide to updating Windows 8 to Windows 8.1.

1. Update Skype

Before updating your PC to Windows 8.1, Advent recommends that you first update the desktop version of Skype. If you’re an existing Skype user, open the program and sign into your account if necessary. Open the Help menu and select Check for Updates, then update the program if prompted. If you’re not a Skype user, open a web browser and download the latest Windows version of Skype from this direct weblink – save the file to your hard drive, then double-click it and follow the prompts to install Skype.

2. Open Windows Update

Next, make sure your Windows 8 PC is up to date by installing the latest Windows updates. First, open Windows Update in Control Panel by swiping in from the right edge of the screen and tapping Search (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search). Type “Windows update” in the search box, tap or click Settings, and then select Check for updates.

3. Search for – and install – updates

Wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your PC. If updates are found, tap or click Install updates. If necessary, restart your PC after the updates have been installed.

4. Download Windows 8.1 update

Now open the Windows Store and select the Update to Windows 8.1 tile or – if you see a notification to “Update to Windows 8.1” you can select the Go to the Store button instead. From the Windows 8.1 product page, select Download.

5. Sit and wait

The download and installation of Windows 8.1 may take an hour or two, but you can continue using your PC while downloading. If asked to take any actions, follow the onscreen instructions.

When prompted to reboot your PC, select the Restart now button or wait for Windows to automatically restart. After Windows restarts, follow any onscreen instructions then sign in to Windows 8.1. The update is complete.
